| Module Description: |
This module facilitates the development and dissemination of self-directed research. The research will focus on a contemporary challenge within the discipline and contribute to knowledge in the field. The learner will select appropriate discipline specific research methodology and techniques of documentation and dissemination for his/her area of research. |
| Learning Outcomes |
| On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: |
| LO1 |
Develop and document self-directed research. |
| LO2 |
Investigate a contemporary challenge within the discipline and contribute to knowledge in this area. |
| LO3 |
Implement appropriate professional communication skills and synthesise the research into appropriate discipline specific formats. |
| LO4 |
Prepare a thesis, presented in a variety of discipline specific formats, that details and evaluates the work undertaken and justifies the conclusions reached. |
| Pre-requisite learning |
Module Recommendations
This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named CIT module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s). |

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list. |
| No incompatible modules listed |

Module Content & Assessment
| Indicative Content |
|
Research
Self directed learning that critically investigates a specific research problem.
|
|
Development of Knowledge
Investigation of a contemporary challenge within the discipline and contribution to knowledge in this area by identifying, applying and critically interpreting appropriate, rigorous and advanced research methods and techniques.
|
|
Professional Communication
Demonstrate the ability to disseminate the research work and outcomes and communicate effectively, through appropriate discipline specific formats and critique.
|
|
Thesis
Present a thesis, utilising a variety of formats, which communicates and disseminates the research work undertaken and the research outcomes developed. The thesis should include the analysis undertaken, results of the work and how this work contributes to furthering knowledge in the specific field of research. The learner must demonstrate a deep and fundamental understanding of the specific research problem addressed.
