Module Description: This module is an introduction to the practical elements of computer technology. It covers the basics of computer hardware, applications software, databases and computer networking.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the makeup of a modern personal computer and describe the role of computers in the laboratory and industry.
LO2 Use a variety of computer application packages including wordprocessor, spreadsheet and web browser for technical and informative purposes.
LO3 Investigate network topology and security, and configure a computer for network access based on practised techniques.
LO4 Build and use a database to store and extract data by employing practiced methodologies.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Computer Hardware
The role of computing in the laboratory and in industry. Overview of Computer Hardware including processor, memory, I/O devices. Overview of computer software including operating system, application software and development software. Generation of the specifications for a top-of-the line modern PC
Applications Software
Web Browser and computer security. Word processing; entering, correcting and formatting text, generating tables; formatting and printing; graphics. Spreadsheets: concept of a cell and of a symbolic formula; mathematical manipulation of data; producing graphs; use of statistical functions and macros.
Databases
The role of databases in industry. Designing and creating a database. Form design. Using graphics on forms. Sorts, filters and queries in a database. Generating a report from a database.
Computer Networks
Computer topologies and access protocols. OSI model. IP addressing. Domain name servers and subnet masks. Network configuration. Introduction to network and computer security.
