Module Description: This module introduces the student to different types of heating and hot water systems developed from renewable energy heat sources.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe and compare the operating principles of renewable heating technologies.
LO2 Explain the correct installation procedures for renewable heating technologies.
LO3 Commission and service the various renewable heating systems.
LO4 Calculate heat energy ratings associated with renewable heating systems
LO5 Fault find on a hot water Solar Panel system

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
High Efficiency Boilers
Oil and gas condensing boilers.
Under Floor Heating
Methods of heating. Typical components and system layout. The correct water temperatures for comfort heating. Pipe sizing and controls.
Biomass
Wood pellet and wood chip for combustion log boilers. Technology and plant components. Storage, handling and transport systems.
Buffer Tanks
To demonstrate the working principles and their necessity in the heating and hot water system.
Solar Panels
Flat plate and vacumm tube solar panels. Typical components and system layout. To select and identify the correct components for a typical hot water installation.
Geothermal
Gound source, air to water, site design and location and controls.
Domestic or Micro Combined Heat and Power Plant
Generation of heat and electricity plant. Surplus sold back to power companies.
