Module Description: This module examines the multiple psychological factors that influence high performance sport.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Evaluate multiple influences on sport performance from diverse psychological perspectives for the elite athlete.
LO2 Evaluate techniques designed to enhance intrapersonal awareness and interpersonal relationships to improve sport performance in practice and competition.
LO3 Appraise models of best practice in relation to supporting the holistic psychological well being of the elite athlete.
LO4 Analyse the psychological principles underpinning elite sports performance and apply the various elements of psychological skills training to optimise sports performance.
LO5 Test experimental laws, principles and concepts in the sport psychology domain
LO6 Examine the perceptual-cognitive and perceptual-motor links to elite athlete performance.

Indicative Content
Sport psychology for the elite athlete
The multiple perspectives and diversity of psychology.
Personal factors that affect elite sport performance
Developmental training strategies. Competition coping mechanisms. Season-to-season processes. End-of-career transition programmes.
Psychometrics and research in sport and exercise psychology
Psychology of performance enhancement and improvement.
Psychological skills training for sports performance
Relaxation techniques, resilience, reflecting, arousal regulation, imagery, self-confidence, goal settng, concentration, focusing, mental toughness, choking and perfect performance.
Application of science to the athlete.
Hick's Law. Fitts' Law. Tau concept. Quiet eye. Vision. Decision-making. Spatial awareness.
