Module Description: This module provides the learner with an intermediate level study of water and wastewater systems. Topics covered include water quality; water sources, treatment and distribution systems; wastewater collection and treatment systems.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Perform preliminary design calculations for water treatment plants
LO2 Perform preliminary design calculations for wastewater treatment plants
LO3 Undertake collection system design
LO4 Undertake water distribution system design
LO5 Research and present a specific topic relevant to water and wastewater engineering

Indicative Content
Introduction to Water
Water Sources. Water Quality. Point and diffuse sources of pollution. Drinking Water Standards. Water demand.
Water Treatment
Water treatment processes: storage, screening, pre-treatment, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, fluoridation.
Water Distribution
Service reservoirs - sizing and location, assessment of pressures / elevations. Pumping stations, pipelines. Water conservation.
Introduction to Wastewater
Sources of wastewater. Wastewater treatment standards. Assimilative capacity of receiving waters.
Wastewater Treatment
Municipal wastewater treatment: preliminary, primary, secondary and sludge treatment. Small scale wastewater treatment plants
Wastewater collection systems
Pipeline design. Combined sewer overflows. Pumping station design.
