Module Description: This module describes the various strategies available for the separation of gaseous, liquid and solid forms.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe appropriate methods of evaporation and distillation for the extraction of constituents from plant and other biological materials.
LO2 Critically discuss the various methods of particules sedimentation and centrifugation for the preparation of extracts.
LO3 Distinguish between the various methods of solvent extraction for aqueous and oil soluble constituents.
LO4 Evaluate current methods of fractionation and isolation of bioactive compounds.
LO5 Select different chromatographic protocols for the separation of components and clean-up of analytes.

Separation Technologies
Separation by gravity (batch and continuous), Sedimentation, Centrifugation, Centrifugal force, Solid phase, Liquid phase, Types of centrifuge, Ultracentrifugation.
Distillation, Dehydration and Evaporation
Distillation. Evaporation. Drying, roller, spray, freeze and fluidised bed, Lyophilisation, Crystallisation, Microwave drying.
Filtration
Theory of filtration, Batch filters,Continuous filters, Types of filters, Cross flow filtration. Membrane Processes; Reverse osmosis, Ultrafiltration, Liquid membranes and Nanofiltration, Filter characterisation.
Solvent Extraction
Liquid-liquid extraction, Principles of solubility in solutions, Solvent extraction equilibria, Two-phase aqueous extraction, Supercritical fluid extraction, Development of industrial extraction protocols, Extraction of organic compounds, Solvent recovery, Solvent extraction for recovery of waste.
Chromatographic methods
Principles of chromatography, Adsorption chromatography, Gel filtration, Ion exchange, Affinity Chromatography, Thin Layer Chromatography,High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Reverse Phase Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography, Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric methods.
