Module Description: This module describes concepts of gene identification and regulation using specific examples to assist the student in understanding the complexity of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic processes.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Review the strategies employed in genome mapping and expression profiling.
LO2 Discuss the principles of gene regulation.
LO3 Review and critique pertinent literature.
LO4 Critically assess the contribution of modern molecular biology in the areas of biotechnology and biomedicine.

Indicative Content
Informatics
An overview of information storage and transfer in biology - both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
Transcription and Translation
A detailed analysis of the process of information transfer from DNA to mRNA to protein and the mechanisms controlling/modulating this information flow.
Regulation
Analysis of gene/protein regulation; at the transcriptional, translational and posttranslational levels. Two-component regulatory systems, transcriptional factors and regulatory proteins.
Molecular Biology Techniques
An overview of the most up-to-date and effective molecular biology techniques and their application in modern molecular biology.
