Module Description: The learner who completes this module will have a knowledge of the engineering properties of materials including concrete, metals, timber and bitumen. This module has two aspects - laboratory experiments and evaluation by assessment
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Carry out standard tests on concrete and its constituent materials
LO2 Write reports and have the ability to work as a member of a team
LO3 Describe the properties of civil engineering materials
LO4 Evaluate the properties of materials

Portland cements, composite and combination cements, cement standard IS EN 197, cement tests to IS EN 196
Aggregates
Characteristics and sources, size and grading, quality requirements to IS EN 12620
Concrete Mixes
Proportions by volume and weight in concrete mixes. Water/cement and cement/aggregate ratios. Nominal, standard and design mixes
Fresh concrete
Consistence, segregation and bleeding, batching, transportation, placing and compaction
Admixtures
Types of admixtures, actions and interactions, effects on concrete properties, standards
Hardened concrete
Strength, durability, quality control, statistical methods
Special concretes
Self-compacting concrete, underwater concrete, sprayed concrete, mass concrete, pumped concrete, high strength concrete
Metals
ferrous and non-ferrous metals, mechanical properties, corrosion
Timber
Growth, characteristics, seasoning, defects, preservation and stress grading
Bituminous materials
Bitumen properties, bituminous road materials
Laboratory tests
Aggregate sampling, sieve analysis of aggregates, consistence of fresh concrete, compressive /tensile strength of concrete
