This module requires the learner to develop a project plan, complete with a schedule of experimental/analytical/modelling work as appropriate for the chosen engineering problem. The learner should critically evaluate a number of potential engineering solutions. The learner will present the research findings in oral and written form.

Indicative Content
Research Skills
Review research skills including technical report writing, research methodology and project planning.
Thesis Development and Publication
Structure of of a Masters thesis and a peer-review conference/journal paper. Preparation for conference presentation. The learner will identify an appropriate conference/journal paper for their research and will identify how the research work may contribute to furthering knowledge in the specific engineering field.
Creativity and innovation
The learner is expected to show creativity and innovation in their research work.
Preliminary experimental/design/analytical/modelling work must be undertaken to enhance and develop the learners understanding of the specific engineering problem addressed. Critically evaluate a number of potential engineering solutions.
Project report
Present a written technical report which communicates the research work undertaken to include the project brief, work schedule, the analysis and outcomes of the preliminary work, overall findings and a project plan for the realisation phase. The learner must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the engineering problem addressed.
