Module Description: This module explores musical theatre at the turn of the twentieth-century and examines the influence of European operetta and jazz music on the genre.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Analyse the development of musical theatre during the early twentieth-century
LO2 Demonstrate critical awareness and historical contextualisation through academic writing
LO3 Apply intermediate musicianship skills in theoretical and practical settings
LO4 Participate actively as a member of a musical theatre chorus

Indicative Content
Musical Theatre Chorus
Rehearsal and performance of repertoire from the early twentieth-century; stylistic awareness, vocal tone and blend; applied musicianship skills (sight-reading and minor intervals [3, 6 and 7]).
Repertory Studies
Development of Broadway as a cultural and economic hub; American operetta, the revue and Ziegfeld's 'Follies'; the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age; historical contextualisation.
Theory and Rudiments of Music
Octave transposition; compound time signatures and rhythmic groupings; major (E and Ab) and minor (B, F#, C#, G, C and F) scales, key signatures and tonic triads; natural, harmonic and melodic minors; intervals, upbeats and phrasing.
