Module Description: This module seeks to explore the issues relating to context-sensitive performance practice in early music, and to foster an awareness, knowledge and understanding of Irish traditional music.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Develop an understanding of historically-informed performance practice through active participation
LO2 Interpret notational conventions and editorial techniques required for performance practice
LO3 Critically evaluate appropriate material from the literature
LO4 Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of Irish traditional instruments and forms
LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of the validity of folk music studies

Indicative Content
Historical performance practice
A study of the development of the Early Music Movement, including an introduction to the concepts, principles and evolution of performance practice studies.
An introduction to Irish traditional music.
A survey of Irish traditional instruments; music - dance music and airs; regional styles of instrumental performance. A study of the Irish song tradition, incorporating sean-nós singing and its influence on the song tradition in the English language, ensemble-playing in the Irish tradition
Ensemble performance
Workshop sessions in each of the above areas of musical performance
