Module Description: This module introduces students to gas and liquid analysis instrumentation in the context of regulatory compliance. The theory is reinforced by lab based practical work and case studies
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Interpret and demonstrate the appropriate techniques and parameters for liquid and gas analysis in a variety of applications
LO2 Execute and operate calibration procedures for liquid and gas analytical instrumentation and interpret experimental data and execute a report on same
LO3 interpret manufacturer specifications with respect to instrument operation and performance
LO4 adjudicate using case studies as to whether analysis complies with regulatory requirements

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Liquid Analysis
Principles of operation, calibration, installation and maintenance of instruments for the measurement of chemical composition to include Conductivity; pH, Dissolved oxygen, TOC, turbidity and temperature. Application of water analysis to a variety of situations to include: public drinking water supplies , water supply to pharmachem and medical devices sector, wastewater treatment outflow, industrial emissions.
Air and Gas Analysis:
Principles of operation, calibration, installation and maintenance of instruments for the measurement of gas concentrations, flow rates, pressure and temperature. Gas mixing using MFCs. Application of gas analysis to a variety of situations to include: Stack emission testing, ambient air pollution monitoring, process gas composition
Regulatory Framework.
IPPC licencing. The role of CEN standard for water and gas analysis. Water Framework Directive, Industrial Emission Directive, CAFÉ Directive. Public Drinking water parameters Case studies of poor and good adherence to regulatory compliance
Sampling Systems
The need for representative samples. Operation of water and gas sampling probes.
