Module Description: To provide an intermediate level of PLC & SCADA based industrial automation. This module includes more advance aspects of PLCs & SCADA used in typical industrial settings.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Interpret the theory of operation of PLCs, SCADA & industrial communications and their applications.
LO2 Implement, compile and debug advanced PLC programs based on sample industrial applications.
LO3 Implement, compile and debug programs to develop mimic and control panels using a commercial SCADA package.
LO4 Use industrial communication protocols monitor and control equipment and rigs.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Programmable Logic Controllers applications and theory
It covers the current status of modern PLCs and how they are utilised & deployed. Review a range of PLC programming languages but primarily LAD. Practical tasks will involve creating and modification of existing logic to assemble programs of commonly found systems in industry.
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
This will emulate how SCADA and HMIs are used in industry. The tasks will include, switches, buttons, graphs/charts, indicators, etc.
Industrial Communication Protocols and Networking
Includes the theory of the mostl popular utilised protocols in industry. The practical implementation of Profibus DP for remote IO and subnets.
