Module Description: This module elaborates the preceding module: Introduction to Process Safety. Emphasis is applied to participants assessing hazards, under guidance, and learning to independently acquire new knowledge.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Examine the process safety risks presented on a site handling hazardous substances
LO2 Interpret the obligations imposed by Process Safety Management standards and regulations and best practice safety management of such risks
LO3 Recommend and justify appropriate control measures
LO4 Critically analyse published research and technical reports and standards; interpreting their applicability to the safety of a process
LO5 Communicate the safety aspects of a chemical process in written and oral form

Indicative Content
Safety management systems
Application of OSHA Process Safety Management approach. Basic HSA health & safety requirements. Process safety hazards. COMAH requirements. Certified safety management systems. Audit of practices.
Layout of plant
Use of spacing to provide inherent / passive safety. Implications of loss of containment on affected zone for a toxic or flammable release, fire or explosions effects. Emergency response measures. implications for land use planning. Long term effects of releases and release-fighting measures.
Change management
Stages in change approval. Application of HAZOP to a proposed change. Assessment of proposed amendments to original change proposal. Close-out of changes.
Plant integrity
Examination and inspection of plant. Sources of ignition and release. Risk based prioritisation. Consideration of ageing assets. Decommissioning protocols.
Elaboration of a specialist area
Sources of information. Literature review. Referencing. Avoidance of plagiarism. Poster preparation and presentation.
