Module Description: This module will allow the student to undertake a project addressing a substantive issue in the workplace. As part of the work based project the student will define a real life problem facing the organisation in which they are employed, deriving the needs of workplace and the learning. Through completion of the project the student will develop a range of technical, transferable, teamwork, oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Establish a project scope and definition aligned to the programme of study that can be solved in the workplace as part of the students everyday work.
LO2 Autonomously manage learning without the need for formal instruction demonstrating their ability to take ownership of their learning and performance in the workplace.
LO3 Plan and organise activities related to the project within a limited timeframe.
LO4 Interpret, evaluate, document and present project findings with the aim of demonstrating the impact of the project in improving the business performance.
LO5 Effectively communicate with peers in the organisation who work in different roles and across the organisation with the aim of achieving the project objectives.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
What is it?
The project will involve a collaboration between the student and the employer organisation by completing a work based project aligned to their field of study. In order for the student to complete work based project they need to be employed by the host organisation where the programme derives the needs of the workplace and the learning i.e. work is the curriculum. In some cases, learners may need to engage in a process of recognition of current competencies prior to the determining the scope of the project.
Exploration
The student is expected to manage and negotiate their project with their employers and academic supervisor. The project will be based on the student professional needs, the company requirements and academic programme learning outcomes. Due diligence must be taken to ensure that the student will receive the necessary support from the employer organisation and the topic of consideration must present a sufficient intellectual challenge aligned to the NFQ level of the programme.
Independent Learning Skills
Once the student and employer have specified the project, the student will need to differentiate between theory and practice and will develop a solution that addresses the needs of the employer and the identified project. The project may not currently be aligned to their current role but should allow the student to work in an area that aligns with their career aspirations.
Work Based project
As part of the project the student will work on an issue that will allow them to develop and enhance their skills aligned to the programme of study. They will be expect to design and implement a solution that demonstrates their learning, work as part of a team to plan and implement the project successfully.
Presentation and Evaluation
The student will be expected to write a research report and present their findings to the employer and academic supervisor.

Reflective Journal The purpose of the journal is to analyse oneself to inform practice and learning through ones experience. As part of this assessment it is expected that students develop the skills to write reflectively and move from descriptive to more critical reflections of their own performance in managing the work based project. 2,3,4,5 20.0 Every Second Week
Project As part of this assessment the project will be evaluated by the employer and academic supervisor. The evaluation will comprise of employer feedback, artifact produced, project report and presentation. 2,3,4 50.0 Sem End
Presentation The student will be expected to present findings of their projects to the academic and industry supervisors. 3,4,5 20.0 Sem End

Coursework Only
This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.
