Module Description: This module develops aural, keyboard and analytical skills and provides an introduction to basic harmony and counterpoint.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Sight-read vocal and rhythmic pieces in one, two and three parts
LO2 Identify, reproduce and improvise on features of a given musical passage
LO3 Analyse simple pieces into their constituent elements
LO4 Identify the principal features of larger eighteenth-century forms
LO5 Harmonise simple melodies and basslines in major and minor keys using triads and their inversions, and utilise species counterpoint
LO6 Demonstrate proficiency in performing basic musical structures on the keyboard

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Aural skills
Sight-singing, memory, aural perception, aural analysis of form, harmony and style characteristics. The harmonic basis of melodies: improvisation of melody over a given harmonic pattern, improvised countermelody.
Analysis
Broad outlines of rondo, sonata, and sonata-rondo form, and detailed analysis of small-scale pieces.
Keyboard skills
The core focus of this area is keyboard harmony, supplemented by sight-reading, transposition, improvisation, figured-bass and score-reading
Harmony and Counterpoint
Employment of the resources of tonal harmony in the setting of melodies and bass-lines, and species counterpoint. counterpoint in two parts.
