Module Description: This module broadens the student's range of German vocabulary in both everyday and business German. It also prepares students for studying and/or working in Germany. In addition, films, as well as short stories and poems by modern authors, provide a well-rounded appreciation of the German language and culture. Completion of this module results in attaining a level comparable to B1.1 (also commonly referred to as lower B1) as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for language proficiency.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 describe essential aspects of culture and heritage in the German-speaking regions;
LO2 comprehend an advanced level of spoken German in everyday and business contexts;
LO3 speak an advanced level of German, in business and everyday situations requiring negotiation and resolution;
LO4 write short essays, extended projects, long letters and emails in German;
LO5 comprehend complex authentic texts in German.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
German for Business
Topics include: health and safety in the workplace; workplace regulations; problem-solving and negotiation; dealing with complaints, defects and breakdowns; income, standard and cost of living, types of employment contracts, business correspondence.
Listening Skills
Group and paired dramatic role-playing; audio materials; film materials
Speaking Skills
Advanced CALL programmes; group and paired dramatic role-playing, including role-plays based on face-to-face (and telephone) interaction between customer and supplier; attending a job interview
Reading Skills
Reading fairly complex texts (such as long newspaper, internet or magazine articles, as well as short stories and poems) in German; understanding forms and questionnaires.
Writing Skills
business correspondence; customer queries and complaints; short story or film analysis in German; filling out forms such as citizen registration forms, tax forms, and bank account application forms.
Grammar
Revision topics include: Konjunktiv II; Konditional; Passiv (Vergangenheit, Perfekt und Präteritum); Hauptsatz und Nebensatz; Hauptsatz + Infinitivsatz; Relativsätze
