Module Description: The student will study the principles and fundamentals of Coastal & Harbour Engineering. The module includes wave and water level analysis and an evaluation of coastal processes and coastal management techniques.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Evaluate coastal zone processes
LO4 Evaluate coastal management measures
LO5 Design coastal and harbour infrastructure

Indicative Content
Introduction
The coastal environment. Coastal and harbour engineering.
Wave Theory and Wave Transformations
Linear wave theory, wave classification, wave energy and development, wave shoaling and refraction, wave diffraction, wave run-up, wave reflection, wave breaking, climate change impacts.
Water Level Variations
Water level measurement, tidal datums, tide prediction, storm surge, climate change impacts, design water levels.
Coastal Zone Processes
Beach sediment properties and analysis, beach profiles, longshore sediment transport, cross-shore sediment transport, aeolian transport, numerical modelling, sediment budget analysis. Coastal zone management. Case studies.
Coastal Protection Techniques
Rubble mound structures; design approach. Vertical sea walls: wave reflection analysis, wave forces. Beach nourishment. Hard & soft solutions. Modelling applications. Case studies.
