Module Description: This module will develop the learner's competences to expert level in the structural design of buildings. It will encapsulate all aspects of structural design including structural form, stability, detailed design, health and safety and construction techniques. The learner will develop a course of study that a structural engineer preparing for the Institution of Structural Engineers Part 3 professional membership examinations would undertake. A holistic approach to structural design, with due consideration to the interaction with the other parties to the design and construction process, will be presented as part of the module content and developed by the learner.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Create and develop structural scheme design solutions for complex building structures
LO2 Prepare detailed structural design calculations and associated information required for complex building or bridge structures
LO3 Demonstrate an expertise in a holistic approach to structural design by integrating knowledge, complexity and judgement
LO4 Demonstrate an expertise in the appropriate communication skills required of the professional structural engineer
LO5 Display a knowledge and understanding of the social, environmental, health and safety, economical and legal issues related to the practice of structural engineering

Structural frames, load paths, modes of failure, in-plane stability, out of plane stability, robustness and disproportionate collapse, building movement
Professional practice
Lectures on topics related to the practice of structural engineering; structural solutions; advanced structural engineering materials; structural engineering software; communication; ethics; liability and risk; architectural form and aesthetics; health and safety; construction economics
