Module Description: This module considers a number of key areas in the developing field of Asset Management in the general engineering and built-environment areas. It is of relevance to all the engineering disciplines and to the built-environment disciplines.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Apply the principles of Asset Management to critically appraise and manage a family of engineering or building assets.
LO2 Undertake an inspection and a condition rating of an engineering or building asset.
LO3 Prepare an Asset Management Plan
LO4 Critique capital and maintenance investment techniques and their application in Asset Management Planning

Case Studies in Asset Management
Case studies in the national and international context which document and appraise the implementation of Asset Management Systems across a range of industries and disciplines.
Asset Management Strategy and Planning
Asset management policy, asset management strategy, demand analysis, strategic planning
Investment Issues
Funding/financing, due diligence, valuation, technology transfer, innovation, capital investment decision-making, whole life costing, time value of money, asset rationalisation and disposal
Technical Issues
Material deterioration models, inpections and condition rating, Markov Chain Analysis, risk management, operations and maintenance decision making, reliability engineering and root cause analysis, decommissioning, rehabilitation, human dimensions
Technologies
Sensors/condition monitoring, structural health monitoring, drone technologies, laser scanning technologies in asset management, current developments

Practical/Skills Evaluation The student shall undertake condition inspections of a group of structures or engineering components. The student shall prepare reports on their inspections. 2 20.0 Week 4
Written Report Asset Management Case Study. The student shall be assigned an individual case study drawn from an engineering, property, transportation, water/wastewater, energy or public authority background. The student shall study and report on how the case study organisation implemented an Asset Management System. He/she shall undertake an analysis of the effectiveness of the Asset Management System in terms of delivering the organisation's business and other objectives. 1,4 20.0 Week 8
Project The student shall produce an asset management plan for the asset group he/she has inspected. The asset management plan shall consider deterioration models, operations and maintenance decision making, the use of database technology for asset management and lifecycle cost and value optimisation. 3,4 50.0 Week 13
Presentation The student shall give a presentation to the class on his/her Asset Management Project. 1 10.0 Week 13
