Module Description: This module aims to introduce students to the issues and challenges facing organisations in today's competitive business environment. A particular emphasis is placed on understanding business models, communication, change and ethics as they can impact the management function. This knowledge provides the students with an insight into the demands placed on management in today’s dynamic work environment.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Explain and discuss established and emerging business models.
LO2 Explain the issues facing business from an ethical context.
LO3 Discuss the important issues of organisational conflict and change management.
LO4 Compare and contrast business communications in organisations.
LO5 Identify and describe the opportunities and challenges that changing environmental forces present to organisations

Indicative Content
Business Models
Overview of business models e.g. affiliation, crowdsourcing, freemium, hidden revenue, no frills, peer to peer. Elements of a business model; challenges of business model innovation.
Business Ethics
The definition of Business Ethics. Identification of the importance of business ethics, how companies can create an ethical business, the benefits of being an ethical business, discussion of unethical business activity and consequence for unethical companies.
Change and conflict management
Forces of change in the business environment; planned change; managing change; resistance to change & overcoming them.
Business Communication
The importance of communication in organisations; forms of communication; communication & reputation management & social media, communication and brand building; improving communication effectiveness.
Competitive Environment & Strategy
Porter's competitive forces - existing competition, threat of new competition, substitute products, bargaining power of buyers/suppliers, complementors. Porter's generic strategies.
