Module Description: This module focuses on advanced French language skills for general use and for the international business sector (written, spoken, aural and reading comprehension proficiency and some work on translation). Resources will also include authentic materials from French media sources, literature and the arts to deepen students' knowledge and understanding of the culture, society and civilisation of France and to develop their analytical skills.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Communicate orally to a high level of competence on a range of relevant topics, including engaging in interactive, presentation and interpretative activities.
LO2 Understand and analyse spoken French and media reports dealing with relevant topics such as film, current affairs, French media, etc.
LO3 Read and analyse advanced-level authentic French texts from relevant sources.
LO4 Research and examine specific aspects of contemporary French culture (e.g. film, visual art, recent history literature), and/or current affairs in a manner appropriate to the format of a specified academic assignment.
LO5 Produce extensive advanced level texts in French and/or translate authentic advanced-level texts.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Translation skills
Translation of authentic texts mainly from French-English, but with a smaller proportion of exercises in translation from English-French.
Grammar
Substantial reinforcement and practical application of key relevant points of French grammar and usage to an advanced standard.
Reading/writing skills
Reading and analysis of relevant authentic resources linked to the international business sector in France, the French economy, current affairs, contemporary media and the arts. Developing students' written comprehension skills in relation to such resources.
Oral/communication skills
Preparing students to deliver oral presentations in a professional manner, to participate in oral discussions in French to a high standard on relevant topics such as current affairs, media and the arts, and to simulate professional oral interactions in a business context.
Literary and cultural studies
Develop students' knowledge and understanding of contemporary French culture, society and civilisation through the analysis of contemporary media, film, literature, and/or selected cultural artefacts (including visual arts and the analysis of selected cultural and economic events e.g. Cannes film festival, Paris fashion week, Taste of Paris, etc.).
