Module Description: This module is designed to introduce learners to the importance of laboratory management within a modern biotechnology facility.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Explain and appreciate how a modern biotechnology laboratory operates from the perspective of design, organisational structure and variety of personnel
LO2 Describe and learn the importance of decision making and troubleshooting, and the impact these skills have on short term and long term projects
LO3 Explain and appreciate the value of planning and budgeting within a biotechnology environment
LO4 Appreciate the importance of strategic experimental design and its application in modern bio-pharmaceutical environments
LO5 Generate, analyse and interpret data sets applicable to biological experiments

Indicative Content
Laboratory Operations
This component will detail the design requirements for a modern biotechnology facility, particularly in relation to structure and design. It will also focus on the organisational and reporting structure of a typical company.
Decision making
This will cover the range and impact of decisions within an organisation, specifically focusing on the logic and rationale for making important decisions within a laboratory.
Planning and Budgeting
This area of study will introduce students to the importance of planning and scheduling within a biotechnology facility. It will also examine how budgets are generated and resourced to cover annual costs. Specialist software and basic tools such as gantt charts will be covered and applied to pre-existing case studies
Experimental design
This will cover the importance of appropriate experimental design when applied to specific research questions. It will also focus on the range of methodologies available and the importance of controls when interpreting results
Data analysis
This section will introduce students to the importance of applying standard statistical principles to the analysis and interpretation of experimental data
