Module Description: This modules provides the technical foundation for understanding information systems and for making wise information technology choices. Areas covered include major components of information technology infrastructure and technologies.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the components and the purposes of different types of Business Information Systems.
LO2 Identify and explain IT Infrastructure components.
LO3 Identify and describe the major aspects and the purpose of Business Intelligence.
LO4 Outline basic issues regarding Data Protection, Privacy and Ethics.
LO5 Identify the major issues pertaining to Information Security and its Management.

Information and BIS
Components of an Information System, Data vs. Information, Data Quality, types of Data Processing, decisions by type and organisational level and the systems that support them (TPS, MIS, DSS, ESS), e-Business and e-Commerce, Competitive Advantage through Business Information Systems.
Categories of computers, input/output devices, comparison of storage technologies (flash etc.), CPU (speed - multicore), graphic cards, Grid Computing, Virtualisation, Cloud Computing, Green Computing, Internet of Things.
Categories of Software: Document Production, Graphics, Spreadsheets, Databases, Collaboration, Presentation Packages, Software for using the Internet, Security Software; Software Distribution Models: Open Source, SaaS; Software for the Web: Java, JavaScript, Ajax, ASP.Net, PHP, NoJS etc.
Networks, Telecommunications and the Internet
Network components, client/server model, network access technologies (wifi, bluetooth, 3G, 4G); The Internet: history, standards, TCP/IP and OSI model, http, ftp, URL, domain names; WAN, LAN, VoIP; Intranets and Extranet; Implications of the Internet on the marketplace; Big Data.
Business Intelligence
Reporting: Basic Reporting, RFM Analysis, OLAP; Data Mining: Unsupervised, Supervised, Market Bucket Analysis; Decision Tree; Data Warehouses and Data Marts; Business Analytics.
Information Security Management
Threats to Information Security, Malware: Viruses, Worms, Trojans and Spyware; Computer Crime; Technical, Data and Human Safeguards: Two-Factor Authentication, Firewall, Encryption, Intrusion Detection Systems; Response to Incidents;
