Module Description: This module covers the key requirements of the health, safety, and environment legislation including the role and contents of the safety statement, accident prevention, emergency planning, environmental awareness, and waste management.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Explain the key requirements of the Safety Health and Welfare at Work framework legislation.
LO2 Comment on the importance of accident reporting and investigation.
LO3 Describe the key components of emergency planning and of an evacuation procedure.
LO4 Explain the contents and function of a Safety Statement and develop competency in hazard identification in the work place.
LO5 Describe the key parameters of an IPPC license, detailing how company activities can impact upon this.
LO6 Outline the role of waste management and detail waste control and minimisation strategies.

Framework Legislation & Regulatory requirements
Safety, Health & Welfare at work Act. General Application Regulations. Knowledge of Safety Signs.
Accident Prevention
Definitions. Heinrick triangle. Accident reporting and investigation. Accident prevention. HSA reporting requirements.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
Causes, prevention, and classification of fire and fire extinguishers. Static electricity. Emergency planning. Emergency response and evacuation procedure.
Safety Statement, Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
Role and contents of a safety statement. Identification of hazards. Chemical and biological legislation, route of exposures, OELs, controlling exposure, MSDS, storage and labeling of hazardous materials, hazmat warning symbols. Identify physical hazards such as noise, manual handling and examine related legislation and control strategies. PPE Regulations & Standards, limitations of PPE.
Environmental Awareness and Waste Management
Describe concepts concerning waste management e.g. waste management hierarchy, polluter pays principle, proximity principle, extended producer responsibility. Identify targets set by EU directives, relevant to this sector and understand the role of regulatory authorities, EPA, Local authorities, IPPC licenses. Hazardous and non-hazardous waste, waste disposal license, spill control and control techniques.
