Module Description: Recording & Sequencing Basics. This module introduces the learner to the recording studio, its environment, equipment and procedures; and also begins the manipulation and editing of audio material using computer platforms.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Identify and describe the principal features of the Recording Studio and its equipment.
LO2 Operate a digital recording desk at a basic level.
LO3 Edit and manipulate digital audio files using a computer platform.
LO4 Utilise digital audio software to realise basic electroacoustic compositions.
LO5 Present digital audio work in CD format.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
The Recording Studio Environment
The layout and workflow of the Recording Studio, the live room, control room. Operating the physical audio desk. Basic microphone deployment. Health & Safety in the Studio.
Recording Equipment
Microphones, cables and connectors, Recording Desk, DAWs, digital media devices, routing, file storage & backup.
Types of Audio
Digital & analogue audio media, digital codecs and file compression. File management and backup protocols.
Audio editing and compositing
Use of basic audio software to perform editing and manipulation of digital audio. Using Midi and DAWs as audio compositing and electroacoustic composition tools.
Midi basics
Hardware midi protocols, soft & virtual instruments, midi controllers.
CD production
Techniques for compiling audio material in CD format.
