Module Description: This module broadens the student's range of German vocabulary in both everyday and business German. It also gives an overview of the current political landscapes of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition, short stories, films and poems by modern authors provide a well-rounded appreciation of the German language. Completion of this module results in attaining a level comparable B1 as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for language proficiency.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 describe the business environments of the various German-speaking regions;
LO2 comprehend an advanced level of spoken German in everyday and business contexts;
LO3 speak an advanced level of German, in business and everyday situations requiring negotiation and resolution;
LO4 write short essays, extended projects, long letters and emails in German;
LO5 comprehend complex authentic texts in German.

Indicative Content
German Business Culture
Topics include: Marketing in Germany; trade fairs and their importance in Germany; dealing with customer complaints; work scheduling; health and safety in the workplace; teamwork in a German-speaking business environment; an overview of the current political landscapes of Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Listening Skills
Group and paired dramatic role-playing; audio materials; film materials
Speaking Skills
Advanced CALL programmes; group and paired dramatic role-playing, including role-plays based on face-to-face (and telephone) interaction between customer and supplier; attending a job interview
Reading Skills
Reading fairly complex texts (such as long newspaper, internet or magazine articles, as well as short stories and poems) in German; understanding forms and questionnaires.
Writing Skills
post-trade fair business correspondence; customer queries and complaints; quotations; short story or film analysis in German; filling out forms such as citizen registration forms, tax forms, and bank account application forms.
Grammar
Revision topics include; seasons, dates, and time expressions; adjectives and adjectival endings; comparative and superlative; questions and interrogatives; personal, indefinite, and demonstrative pronouns.
