Module Description: Analysis and discussion of key banking activities (inc. financial markets), management issues and controversies. The course content will be informed by an international perspective.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the role of financial institutions and assess the challenges they face.
LO2 Develop strategies for managing liquidity and solvency within regulatory frameworks.
LO3 Explain and quantify the different types of risk faced by financial institutions.
LO4 Develop strategies for risk mitigation by financial institutions.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Banking Fundamentals
Financial intermediation / theories / benefits, role of banks, banks and other financial institutions, regulatory framework, current issues in banking, forces of change in banking. Types of banking / retail, corporate, investment banking. Role of central banks.
Financial Markets
Bond prices & the determination of interest rates, term structure of interest rates, IR derivatives / futures, options & swaps, FX & FX markets. Bank funding operations, treasury operations, proprietary trading.
Banking Management
Balance sheet & income structure, bank performance and financial ratio analysis, asset liability management, liquidity management and reserves, capital adequacy management, off balance sheet activities, loan sales & securitisation.
Risk Management
Credit risk, interest rate risk, funding risk, FX risk, market risk, operational risk, capital risk and solvency, risk interaction. Managing risks. Quantitative examples.
