Module Description: This module provides a practical and theoretical introduction to information technology as applied to Business.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe global business environment and understand the role of information technology in ensuring business competitiveness
LO2 Describe the key IT infrastructure components and understand the issues involved in their operation and development.
LO3 Discuss the importance of effective use of networks in business
LO4 Explain key data concepts and the issues involved in developing corporate data management capabilities
LO5 Build simple spreadsheet models for business calculations.

The Digital Firm
Competitive business environment, role of information systems, impact on business strategy, impact of the internet, need for a socio-technical view, information systems and decision making, management issues, introduction to ethical and social issues, privacy and intellectual property, key management challenges.
Infrastructure
The internet, internet platforms, e-business technologies, internal and external applications, payment systems, mobile and wireless technologies, components of a computer system, infrastructure evolution, h/w trends, managing h/w assets, managing infrastructure.
Software
Operating systems, application software, programming languages, managing s/w assets, s/w trends, collaborative software.
Network Technology and Cloud Computing
Components and functions of telecommunications systems, telecomms platforms, consulting and integration services, cloud computing (infrastructure, platform and application), private & public clouds, service level agreements.
Data Management
Database fundamentals, database models, corporate data model, data analysis, data management and administration, data warehousing, storage system trends, data privacy, ethical issues, management issues.
Spreadsheets
Spreadsheet design basics, simple model development, charts, data manipulation, functions.
