Module Description: This module introduces the student to Spain, its geography, culture and history. It also introduces the student to Spanish pronunciation, alphabet and numbers. It covers basic grammatical structures used to talk about oneself, likes and dislikes, one's family and one's town/city.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Research the fundamental features of the history, geography and culture of Spain
LO2 Listen to basic conversations in Spanish, including introductions, numbers, families, descriptions of people and town/cities.
LO3 Speak basic phrases in Spanish about one self and one's family and town/city
LO4 Write short basic texts in Spanish about oneself, one's family, likes and dislikes and town/city.
LO5 Read and comprehend short, basic written paragraphs in Spanish about oneself, one's family, likes and dislikes and town/city.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Introduction to Cultural Studies
The students will be introduced to the geography and history of Spain
Listening skills
Basic classroom interaction, understanding questions and simple phrases used in everyday situations. Audio materials include CDs, videos, films, podcasts, mp3 and many other audio internet files.
Speaking skills
The sound of Spanish, pronunciation of the Spanish alphabet and numbers; basic classroom interaction, answering questions about yourself, your likes/dislikes, your family and your town/city
Writing skills
Writing basic Spanish texts about oneself, one's likes and dislikes, families, physical descriptions and towns/cities.
Reading skills
Reading short, basic paragraphs in Spanish, e.g. about people's jobs, family, towns and cities in the Hispanic World.
Grammar
Areas of Grammar covered for the above skills include: basic verbs like SER, TENER, GUSTAR, HAY, ESTAR; Personal Pronouns; possessive pronouns; definite and indefinite articles; negation.
