Module Description: This module is intended to provide students with an understanding of the legal foundations of the European Union's single market and the impact of the single market project on the business environment.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Critically analyse the stages involved in the development of the European Single Market.
LO2 Evaluate the legal regulation of the Free Movement of Goods and apply the legal rules in case studies.
LO3 Critically analyse the legal regulation of the Free Movement of Workers and apply the legal rules in case studies.
LO4 Evaluate the limitations and exceptions allowed to the free movement rules under EU Law.
LO5 Critically analyse the development of the single market in relation to capital, services and competition policy

Indicative Content
The development of the Single Market
The concept of a single market. The phases of European economic integration - from a customs union to the single market. Monetary union and the Euro. Common policies.
Free Movement of Goods
The barriers to the free movement of goods. Customs duties, internal taxation and non - fiscal measures. Legal rules, key decisions of the Court of Justice and case studies for business.
Free Movement of Persons
The rules governing the free movement of workers and other persons. The concept of Union citizenship. Legal rules, key decisions of the Court of Justice and case studies for business.
Limitations and Exemptions
Derogations to the free movement rules in relation to goods and persons. Justifications for exemptions. Rules relating to third country nationals. Legal rules, key decisions of the Court of Justice and case studies for business.
Free movement of Capital and Services. Competition Law.
The development of free movement in relation to services and capital. Aspects of European Union competition law. Implications for cross border trade in the European Union.
