Module Description: The aim of this module is to ensure students understand in detail, and have the ability to apply the principles and practice of taxation and can identify and resolve complex taxation problems.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Apply computational rules for Income Tax and advise on appropriate tax planning measures, including advise on the requirements of a revenue audit.
LO2 Apply computational rules for Corporation Tax in the preparation of Corporation Tax returns and advise on appropriate tax planning measures.
LO3 Apply the computational rules for Capital Gains Tax in the preparation of Capital Gains Tax returns and advise on appropriate tax planning measures including the use of available reliefs.
LO4 Explain the operation of Capital Acquisitions Tax, and apply the computational rules for Capital Acquisitions Tax and provide appropriate advise.
LO5 Explain the principles of Stamp Duty and calculate any duty tax payable having optimised the use of available reliefs.

Income Tax
Case I,II,III,IV,V of Schedule D, Schedule E, Schedule F, Tax Based Incentives, Withholding Taxes, Charges, Exemptions, Anti-avoidance, Employment and Investment Incentive Scheme, Seed Capital Relief , Employee incentive schemes, ESOTS and Save As You Earn Schemes, Residence and Domicile, Special Assignee relief programme, Foreign Earnings deduction, Double taxation relief available to individuals. High income earner restrictions.
Revenue Audit
Revenue Powers, Revenue Offences, The code of practice for Revenue Audit, Tax geared penalties and interest, Charter of Rights, Mandatory Disclosure.
Corporation Tax
Adjustments to the accounting profit for tax purposes, claiming capital allowances and the impact of changes to accounting periods, Groups, including annual payments and losses for Groups/ Consortia, Utilisation of losses, Corporation Tax Reliefs, including tax incentives, R & D Tax credits, Holding Company Regime, Company Residence, Double Taxation Relief and treatment of branches, Exemptions for start up companies.
Capital Gains Tax
Computation of Capital Gains Tax liabilities for both individuals and companies, Share Valuations, Retirement Relief, Transfer of a business to a company, Interaction with CAT, Acquisition by a company of its own shares, Paper for Paper relief.
Capital Acquisition Tax
Principles of CAT, general exemptions, Agricultural Relief, Business Property Relief.
Stamp Duty
Stamp duty including transfers between associated companies and reconstruction/ amalgamation relief, Stamp duty with respect to property transactions.
