Module Description: This module introduces the concept of culture and the identification of cultural diversity and similarities among international tourist markets. Focus is also on the importance of intercultural communication and the relationship between tourism and culture.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Explain the concept and characteristics of culture and subcultures within the tourism industry.
LO2 Examine the impact of tourism on culture
LO3 Examine the concept of globalisation and its impact on cultural diversity
LO4 Describe the issues involved in intercultural communication
LO5 Examine the culture characteristics of tourists from emerging tourist markets and Ireland's main tourist markets.

Indicative Content
Tourism Culture
The concept and characteristics of culture. Subcultures, purpose of culture, and cultural distance. The major differences among cultures. Cultural values. The difference between national culture, nationality, country of residence and country of birth.
Globalisation and Cultural diversity.
Globalisation and its impact on tourism and culture. Cultural diversity and it's influence on the tourism industry.
Tourism and Culture Impacts
The impact of tourism on culture that leads to the erosion of local cultures, hostility, culture change, diffusion, borrowing, cultural drift, acculturation and adaptation. The concept of culture shock, its types, symptoms and phases.
Intercultural Communication
The influence of culture on communication. Identify barriers to cross cultural communication. Verbal and non verbal signals. Conversation and interaction styles. Ethnocentrism and stereotyping and their influences on communication.
Culture and Emerging Tourist Markets
The culture of Ireland's main tourist markets.The culture of tourists from emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China.
