Module Description: This module provides an overview of the Airline Industry along with an introduction to the practical skills necessary to operate a Global Distribution System (GDS)
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the organisations involved in the global airline industry
LO2 Examine the airline business industry
LO3 Utilise a Global Distribution System (GDS) to access travel and airline information
LO4 Create a passenger name record, display a list of fares, access fare rules and notes on a Global Distribution System (GDS)

Indicative Content
Introduction to the Airline Industry
Overview of the current airline industry. Factors that affect the airline industry. The benefits of the airline industry. The role of IATA, ICAO and the EU within the airline industry. Airline regulatory environment.
The Airline Business
Airline terminology and abbreviations. Journey types. The key characteristics of schedule, charter and low cost airlines models. Airline product planning. Codeshare, airline alliances, joint ventures and mergers within the airline industry. Airline costs and revenue.
Travel and airline information
Access and understand an airline's availability display. Retrieve information on health, visa and passport requirements. Display weather conditions, calculate world time differences. Identify, code and decode airline, airport, city, country and currency codes. Access the help and information pages of a Global Distribution System.
Passenger name record
Create a passenger name record using the four mandatory fields required to complete the reservation. Retrieve and understand all components of a fare display, access fare rules and notes. Price an itenerary and demonstrate the issuing of a flight ticket. Operate a Global Distribution queue system.
