Module Description: A first course in statistical data analysis as required for the tourism industry. The emphasis is on the use of software tools and the analysis and interpretation of computer-generated output.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Tabulate data and represent data in graphical form.
LO2 Calculate and interpret summary statistics.
LO3 Construct, interpret, and use index numbers.
LO4 Describe and employ the functions of financial mathematics.
LO5 Use a spreadsheet package to generate solutions and reports for statistical and financial data analysis.

Indicative Content
Descriptive statistics
Presentation of data in the form of charts and graphs, including histograms, ogives, bar charts and pictograms. Measures of central tendency and other measures of location, quartiles, deciles and percentiles, advantages and disadvantages. Measures of dispersion, range, and standard deviation.
Index Numbers
Analysis of the consumer price index and the role of recreation and culture, and restaurants and hotels therein, construction of simple indices, Laspeyres and Paasche and inflation/deflation using index numbers.
Financial Mathematics
Simple and compound interest, APR, depreciation and annuities, NPV and IRR.
