Module Description: This module introduces the learners to the knowledge, skills and competences necessary for the effective management within the context of the business of Tourism and Hospitality. The aim of this module is to develop the key understanding of managing in the hospitality and tourism business sector, particularly in relation to people, facilities, and the business resource.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Recognise current management issues relevant to tourism and hospitality.
LO2 Describe the functions of management.
LO3 Identify the principles and practices of management to include planning, decision making and control.
LO4 Identify various types of organisational structures and describe the importance of communication in an organisation.
LO5 Describe motivation and leadership theories and the practical application of these in the workplace, particularly in reference to Human Resource Management and the management of teams and groups.

The Nature of management
The management process, what managers do, management roles and skills, management functions.
The Business Environment
Direct and indirect elements, business ethics and corporate responsibility, SWOT Analysis, the micro and macro environment.
Planning and Decision Making
Planning process and obstacles to planning, operational, tactical and strategic planning, decision making process, decision making models, the control process.
Organisation Structure and Design
Specialisation, chain of command, decentralisation, span of control, mechanistic and organic organisations.
Motivation and Leadership
Motivation theories and practical ways to motivate, current issues in motivation, leadership theories and styles.
Human Resource Management
Responsibilities of a personnel manager, recruitment and selection, manpower planning and performance appraisal.
Teams and Groups
Formal and informal groups, characteristics of an effective team, group motivation, the stages of group development.
Communications
The communication process, barriers to effective communication, verbal and non-verbal communication.
