Module Description: This module examines the design and construction of vehicle electrical circuits and the operation of their associated components.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Compile a list of safety precautions to be observed before and during electrical repair of motor vehicles.
LO2 Interpret vehicle manufacturer automotive electrical circuit schematics and calculate the electrical effects of anomolies within the electrical circuit.
LO3 Use electrical components and associated wiring to construct series, parallel and series-parallel electrical circuits.
LO4 Design electrical circuits to meet modern day requirements of vehicle sub-systems.
LO5 Construct, test and record electrical values of designed vehicle electrical circuits/systems.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Vehicle lighting circuit.
Includes, heads/dipped beams, side marker lights, tail lights, dash lights, spotlights, reversing lights .
Vehicle ignition circuits
Basic ignition, electronic ignition, inductive triggered, hall triggered, optical triggered and wasted spark, spark plug construction.
Vehicle warning circuits
Brake pad wear indicator, horn circuit, indicator/hazard warning circuit, bulb failure indicator.
Vehicle fuel systems
Electrical fuel pump, fuel injector , inductive speed sensor, thermistor, potentiometers and introduction to electronic control units. Automotive system schematic and block diagrams.
Vehicle body electrical circuits
Heated rear windscreen & door mirrors, electric radiator cooling fan, starting and charging circuits, central locking (solenoid and motor operated) electrical operated windows, windscreen wiper circuit.
Automotive electrical schematic diagrams
Vehicle electrical circuit design and topology, schematic diagrams and associated symbols, circuit diagnostics.
