Module Description: This module builds on the student's knowledge of setting out, machining, jointing, repair and assembling, concentrating on straight to curve and curve to curve joinery.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Identify correct jointing methods for fitting straight to curve and curve to curve components.
LO2 Prepare a working drawing incorporating jointing techniques and moulding detailing.
LO3 Measure and outline material shape and size requirements for the curve and straight sections.
LO4 Set out accurately the jointing details in accordance with building regulations.
LO5 Execute to a high finish and tolerance the sawing, chiselling assembly and fitting requirements.
LO6 Apply safe working practices with tools and machinery during all workshop operations.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Workshop Practice
Conduct a Risk Assessment and use safe working practice in relation to tool and machine operation (portable planer, sander).
Construction
Marking out, Sawing square in both vertical and horizontal planes. Machining curved material (moulding and rebating, bolting and dowelling, morticing, chiselling, fitting, assembly (squaring, twist prevention, gluing and wedging) and finishing.
Materials
Natural softwood PAO manufactured boards, glues and bolts.
Jointing
Hammer headed keys, lamination methods, bridle jointing, housed, wedged and dovetailing. Avoidance of short grain and splitting.
Setting Out
Preparaton of working drawing and setting out boards in accordance with building regulations. Transferring joint detailing to materials.
