Module Description: Students will become familiar with a range of biomedical devices and discuss the classification, function, limitations, and material characteristics desired and achieved. Students will gain an appreciation of the importance of Regulatory Requirements in the workplace. Students will gain an appreciation of the importance of ergonomics in the workplace. Students will be able to identify areas where the knowledge obtained from this subject can be related to Biomedical Engineering.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe a range of biomedical components and explain their function.
LO2 Identify the considerations for selection of appropriate materials for specific biomedical devices.
LO3 Identify the importance of regulatory requirements when working in the healthcare industry.
LO4 Describe different classifications of medical devices
LO5 Explain the importance of ergonomics in the workplace.

Artificial Joints
Definition of a joint. Basic anatomy of major load bearing joints. Overview of other joints. History and development of joint replacement surgery. Importance of Material Selection and Quality Assurance in Implant manufacture. Surface finish. Fixation. Overview of surgical procedure and Instruments. Patient recovery and rehabilitation.
Minimally Invasive Devices
Definition of minimally invasive surgery. Benefits of procedure. Examination of cardiovascular and neurological devices.
Biomedical Device Development.
Overview of other relevant biomedical devices.
Ergonomics
Anthropometry. Static and dynamic muscular effort. Optimal use of muscle strength. Practical guidelines for workstation layout.

Overview of device classification
Regulation
Importance of meeting requirements.
