Module Description: This module gives the student advanced 3D Modelling techniques. The students are also exposed to component design. Teams of students will undertake a project which will involve analysis, design and presentation segments.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Develop 3D models/assemblies with industry specific 3D parametric modelling software.
LO2 Produce 2D working drawings from 3D parametric models.
LO3 Apply functional design to generate digital prototypes incorporating best engineering practises and identifying ethical/environmental impact considerations.
LO4 Analyse/redesign an existing mechanical system
LO5 Design,test and report on a system as part of a team.

Indicative Content
3D Solid Modelling
Design of advanced solid models features (e.g.: Offset edges tools, Sweeps, Blends (Lofts), Shell, Draft, Rib and Thin; Relations and Parameters.)Assembly of parts (e.g.: project folder, content centre,B.O.M). The use of 3D modelling techniques for sheet metal design, shaft, bearing and spring selection, ethical design through material and Environmental considerations.
Machine Component Design
Simple Machine Design. Selection and use of chain drives, electric motors, variable speed drives, coupling, fasteners and welded joints.
Limits and Fits
Basic Size, Deviation, Tolerance, Shaft Basis System, Hole Basis System, I.S. EN 20286.Geometrical Product Specifications EN iso11-1.
