Module Description: This module provides learners with an in-depth understanding of modern automotive technologies and operating principles.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the construction, operation and refinements of modern engine, transmission and running gear technology.
LO2 Outline the operating principles of modern diesel and petrol fuel and engine management systems.
LO3 Outline and describe the operation of passive and active vehicle safety systems.
LO4 Assess performance data and efficiencies of engine and brakes.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
ENGINE DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS
Engine vibration and crankshaft balance. Piston design features. Fixed and variable valve timing control. Turbocharging systems.
PETROL FUEL SYSTEMS
Construction, layout and operating principles of modern petrol fuel injection and engine management systems. FSI, TSI, returnless petrol fuel systems.
DIESEL FUEL SYSTEMS
Construction, layout and operating principles of modern diesel fuel injection systems including Rotary pump; Common Rail and Unit Injector systems. Cold starting, pre-glow and after-glow systems.
PETROL & DIESEL EMISSIONS
Emission control standards for spark ignition and compression ignition engines. Construction and operating principles of modern engine emission control devices.
BRAKING SYSTEMS
Tandem master cylinder and pneumatic brake servo construction and operation. ABS, ESP and Brake Assist systems, Braking performance calculations.
STEERING & SUSPENSION SYSTEMS
Power Assisted Steering systems - hydraulic, electro-hydraulic and electro-mechanical systems. Advanced modern tyre and rim construction and identification. Tyre pressure monitoring systems. Construction and operation of modern independent suspension systems.
AUTOMOBILE SAFETY SYSTEMS
Passive and active venicle safety features. Basic seat belt pre-tensioner and airbag system layout and operation. Maintenance, safety and repair considerations.
TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS
Construction and operation of modern automobile transmission systems. Dual mass flywheel & clutch , two and four wheel drive gearbox and final drive assemblies.
