Module Description: This module will enable the learner to design and detail one-way spanning slabs, continuous beams, braced non-slender columns and pad foundations in accordance with relevant codes and standards.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Design singly and doubly reinforced concrete beams.
LO2 Design one-way spanning reinforced concrete slabs.
LO3 Design reinforced concrete braced non-slender columns and pad footings.
LO4 Prepare reinforcement drawings and reinforcement schedules.

Introduction
Reinforced concrete (RC) as a structural material; structural properties of concrete and steel reinforcement; limit state design to Eurocode 2; partial factors of safety; loading combinations at the ultimate limit state
Reinforced concrete beams
RC beam types; analysis of the RC section from first principles; analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate RC beams; singly and doubly RC beams; derivation of basic design equations for moment and shear; design to resist moment and shear; serviceability limit state checks; detailing and scheduling of reinforcement
Reinforced concrete one-way spanning slabs
RC slab types; analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate RC one-way spanning slabs; design to resist moment and shear; serviceability limit state checks; detailing and scheduling of reinforcement
Reinforced concrete braced non-slender columns
RC column types; braced and unbraced RC frames; slender and non-slender RC columns; classification of RC column slenderness; design equations for axial load and moment; design charts; detailing and scheduling of reinforcement
Reinforced concrete pad foundations
RC foundation types; design of RC pad foundations; detailing and scheduling of reinforcement
