Module Description: This module provides students with an understanding of the functions and theories of management practice and their application within the Automobile & Transport Industries.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Define the roles and functions of management within organisations and discuss the essential skills required for effective management within the Motor Industry
LO2 Discuss the evolution of management theories and analyse their relevance to modern day management activities within the Motor Industry
LO3 Describe the nature of organisations, organisational structures and changing environmental impacts within the Motor Industry
LO4 Discuss the roles and activities of Human Resource Management and their importance for organisational stability

Indicative Content
Definition of management. Types and levels of management within the Automotive and Transport industries. Functions of management. Management skills. Styles of management.
Evolution and development of management theories. Classical, Behavioural, Quantative and Contingency management approaches and their application within the Automotive and Transport industries.
Definition and basics of planning. Levels and types of planning for Automotive sales and after-sales applications. Establishing organisational goals. SWOT analysis. Decision making. Contingency planning. Human Resource planning.
Definition and nature of leadership. Theories and styles of leadership and their application within the Automotive industry.
Definition and concept of motivation. Motivational theories. Motivational strategies including Commission, Performance Related Pay, Bonus Schemes and Job Design considerations within the Automotive industry.
Forms of organisational structure and operations. Basics of organising, departmentalisation & span of control, teamwork and delegation within and between Sales and After-sales departments within the Automotive and Transport industry organisations.
Purpose and importance of control within organisations. Types of control – both financial and non-financial. Levels of control and performance measurement techniques used in the Automotive industry.
