Programme Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this programme the graduate will be able to demonstrate... :

PO1 Knowledge - Breadth
  (a) A fundamental understanding of the theory, concepts and methods in the engineering sciences, electronic, mechanical and system level technologies, mathematics, information and communications systems, business and entrepreneurship, as well as in the user-centred design, and engineering practice relevant to smart product engineering.
PO2 Knowledge - Kind
  (a) A specialised knowledge and understanding of the engineering sciences, electronic mechanical and system level technologies, mathematics, ICT, design, business and engineering practice relevant to the specification, design, prototyping, production and life-cycle support of smart products while considering any inherent limitations.
PO3 Skill - Range
  (a) The ability to specify and use appropriate methods, skills and techniques, incorporating modern computer-based engineering tools, to solve a range of complex problems within the domain of smart product engineering.
PO4 Skill - Selectivity
  (a) The ability to identify user requirements and conceptualise and design an integrated smart product, system or process to meet those specified needs and to carry out an evaluation of the technical, usability and environmental performance of the design to identify strengths and limitations.
PO5 Competence - Context
  (a) The ability to engage in advanced professional activity, applied research and product development as it relates to smart product systems including the capacity to research, devise, develop and formulate appropriate solutions while understanding the regulatory, social and ethical context of product development over its life cycle.
PO6 Competence - Role
  (a) The ability to work autonomously, in teams and in multi-disciplinary settings, to set and implement work objectives and priorities and to assume responsibility for the direction of key tasks. The ability to communicate effectively with the engineering community and with society at large.
PO7 Competence - Learning to Learn
  (a) The capacity to identify learning needs and to undertake continuous learning by identifying suitable resources (e.g. peers, course notes, search tools), including newly published work, effectively engaging with those resources and then monitoring and reflecting on their own learning.
PO8 Competence - Insight
  (a) An understanding of the wider social, business and economic contexts within which the engineer developing smart products must operate and the need for high ethical standards in the practice of the profession including responsibilities towards people, society and the environment; appreciate the impact of engineering solutions in a global, contemporary, societal, commercial and environmental context supported by the interpretation and application of appropriate safety considerations and standards.
