Description:This module is designed to: a) excite the learner about his/her chosen field of study; b) reinforce and develop key academic skills such as creativity, innovation and teamwork which the learner will require both in his/her academic life in CIT and subsequently in the world of work; c) prepare and motivate him/her for a lifetime of independent and reflective learning.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to
  1. Demonstrate that problem solving is fun, educational, rewarding, and helpful to society.
  2. Display creativity and problem solving skills.
  3. Plan and execute a project as part of a team.
  4. Communicate ideas effectively by written/visual/oral means in a manner intended to the appropriate audience.
  5. Develop a learning plan for his/her future academic and professional career.

Indicative Content
  • Creativity
    Introduction to the concept of creativity. Characteristics of the creative person. Creative processes: evolution, synthesis, revolution, re-application, changing direction.
  • Team skills
    Composition of successful teams. Individual personality types within teams. Stages in team building. Running effective teams. Consensus building and conflict resolution.
  • Written Communication skills
    Writing: basic rules of written communication; writing executive summaries and abstracts; report formats; essay writing; document preparation.
  • Verbal Communication Skills
    Presenting: planning an oral presentation; structuring information; eye contact; use of gesture; voice projection; team choreography; use of cue cards; overheads; powerpoint; building redundancy into presentation material; dealing with a Q/A session; functions of non-verbal communication; forms of NVC; how to control NVC.
  • Learning Plan Development
    Academic planning skills: ECTS system, credits, credit accumulation, mandatory, elective and free modules, the CIT book of modules, work placement, stages, progression, award classification. Professional development: career paths, professional bodies.
